Earlier this year, we were delighted to host Indonesian sound artist and ecological activist Rani Jambak as our Musician In Residence. Jambak explored Huddersfield through a digital lens with support from the hcmf// team, connecting with artists, collecting field recordings and learning of the town’s environmental history.
On Friday 22 July, Jambak presented her new work at Rumah Gagas, West Sumatra, performing on the Kincia Aia – an instrument created over the course of the residency. The Kincia Aia is Jambak’s sonic reimagining of ancient engineering principles used in traditional Indonesian irrigation systems. The machine triggers sounds gathered from Minangkabau and Huddersfield, creating a mesmerising soundscape that proposes a unique parallel between these places.
