The music and ensemble design of Fire-Love Expanse is an experiment utilising the different approaches to making music of two diverse ensembles. Led by enigmatic trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith, the group’s only expectation is to explore and examine the inherent possibilities when two different methodologies of music-making collide, embrace, and create together.
This performance is inspired by Chaco Canyon, described as a high-desert landscape in what is now known as northwestern New Mexico, where unique environmental conditions enabled the culture of ancestral Puebloan civilisation to take root in the 9th century and flourish for over 300 years. Smith dedicates this work to South African singer, songwriter, actress and civil rights activist Miriam Makeba, whom he considers a co-creator of this work.
