Assembled in 2015, Marco Blaauw’s Monochrome Project set out to flesh out the true variability of trumpet sounds and playing techniques through projects and compositions. The trumpet ensemble demonstrates the astonishing adaptability of their chosen instrument through duplication and dense sound fields, shifting distances, perspectives and extreme dynamic curves, and subtle mutations in colour and motion. The single timbre becomes both the sonic foundation and its accentuating highlight, proving that less can also be more.
This year, the maverick group returns to premiere new hcmf// commissions from composer and sound artist Claudia Molitor and American trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith, in what will prove to be an absorbing continuation of their extensive sonic explorations.
Produced by hcmf// supported by Hinrichsen Foundation, Vaughan Williams Foundation, The Marchus Trust and Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation; also supported by Kunststiftung NRW and Ministry of Culture NRW
