Stefan Schultze (Germany, 1979) Hyperplexia: Remapping the Piano 50’-60’ UK Premiere

In Hyperplexia, visionary composer and pianist Stefan Schultze rips up the rulebook and reimagines the piano for the 21st century. Receiving its UK Premiere at hcmf// 2025, this bold, high-concept performance is a dazzling exploration of the piano’s outer limits.
Its title denotes an obsessive fascination with the vast sonic possibilities inherent in the piano, but also a state of ecstasy induced by the imaginative exploration of the limitless compositional and performative potentials it offers. Through a series of live experiments investigating the structural, mechanical, and sonic dimensions of the piano, Schultze disrupts any preconceived notions we might have regarding the instrument.
The performance features two traditional grand pianos: one played directly by Schultze; the other equipped with a self-playing mechanism triggered by MIDI data which can be generated and varied in real-time, as can the sound of the piano. The result is a piece that blurs the lines between composer, performer and remixer; conductor and interpreter; improvisation and scripted performance.
This is not just a concert – it’s a sonic experiment, a high-stakes improvisation, and a wild hybrid of acoustic mastery and futuristic tech. Schultze invites you to witness the piano like you’ve never heard (or seen) it before.
