Marco Blaauw’s trumpet ensemble, The Monochrome Project, was set up in 2015 to flesh out the true variability of trumpet sounds and playing techniques through projects and compositions. The ensemble demonstrates the astonishing adaptability of the trumpet through duplication and dense sound fields, shifting distances, perspectives and dynamic curves, subtle changes in colour and motion. The single timbre becomes both the sonic foundation and its accentuating highlight, proving that less can also be more.

At hcmf// 2022, the ensemble pairs Justè Janulytè’s Unanime – in which the trumpet octet is treated as a single body, like an organ made of different pipes sharing the same breath, the same soul – with the World Premiere of a new work by Raven Chacon, a Diné composer, performer and installation artist from the Navajo Nation who won a 2022 Pulitzer Prize for his 2021 work Voiceless Mass.
