Soundwalk: Betweenness

Please note: to experience Betweenness, audiences will need access to:

*A smartphone (running IOS15 or Android 15 or higher) with the Echoes app installed (Android / iPhone). To avoid connection issues on the day, we suggest that audiences download the app and the soundwalk in advance. The soundwalk will be available in Echoes from Sat 29 Nov and can be downloaded here.

During the soundwalk, Echoes will trigger an interactive soundscape based on the participant’s physical location. The soundwalk is mostly flat, but includes one flight of steps and some uneven surfaces. An accessible route is available on request; please ask at the starting point.

What if we could hear the echoes of lost worlds around us?  

Betweenness is a site-specific composition set within an immersive, geolocated sound world; a speculative journey exploring the wild soundscapes and sonic signatures of past ecosystems, prompting us to consider the past, present and future ecologies of the familiar areas we live in through collective listening. 

Laura Campbell is a sound artist and musician whose practice combines ecological listening with experimental composition and performance. Currently undertaking a practice-based PhD in Composition at the University of Huddersfield, she explores how site-specific scores can reshape our relationship with place. 

With Betweenness, Campbell asks us to tune in differently: to listen and interact with species that once inhabited the landscape, as echoes of former habitats come alive through spatialised sound.
