New York at the turn of the 1970s was a crucible of artistic ferment, of paths crossing and recrossing, and of a dense web of artistic influence: reciprocal, tightly bound, and sometimes unexpected. While working as taxi drivers and furniture removal men, Steve Reich and Philip Glass were finding the time to compose and perform in each other’s works, early landmarks of musical minimalism like Reich’s Four Organs and It’s Gonna Rain and Glass’s Music in Similar Motion. They were also in the throes of a personal and artistic dispute that would last for decades and led to the retitling of Glass’s seminal Two Pages for Steve Reich to simply Two Pages. Meanwhile, in the same city, Morton Feldman – by no account a member of their minimalist school – was developing his own idiosyncratic vision of a highly focused, minimalistic aesthetic. A great admirer of Four Organs, two years later Feldman penned his own exploration of monochromaticism, the sensitive and mysterious epic Five Pianos. As all three men celebrate landmark birthdays, GBSR Duo and friends celebrate a moment of artistic scenius that changed American music for decades to come.
