Paul Scully electronics / video / composer
Paul Scully (Ireland, 1993)
new work (2024) 30’ World Premiere
Climate change is an object to which we as humans are inextricably linked, yet it is so large that it is hard to see in its entirety. We mostly just perceive its effects on other things. To be human is to be entangled in a sticky irony of unintended consequences. Climate change as an object is glued to us, yet impossible to reach.
This new audiovisual work from multidisciplinary composer Paul Scully builds on his previous work around the philosophy of ecology, particularly in relation to the North Bull Island Nature Reserve in Dublin Bay where he grew up and spends much of his time. Using footage from the island at night, electronics, transducers, and unusual staging/lighting, this new piece explores the uncanny experience of being a human at this stage of the Anthropocene so close to ecological disaster – our strange awareness of our entanglement in climate change. It seeks an in-between-ness, shedding light on this stuck-ness without trying to rid itself of it.
