This daring and imaginative programme from the ever-innovative French ensemble ONCEIM (Orchestre de Nouvelles Créations, Expérimentations et Improvisations Musicales) brings together two visionary artists who expand the boundaries of orchestral music in powerful and unexpected ways — with both works receiving their UK premieres at hcmf// 2025.

Christian Marclay’s Constellation marks a departure from his renowned practice in sound art and free improvisation. Known for collaborations with John Zorn and Sonic Youth, Marclay began with recordings of his own noise-based performances, which were then digitally transformed into complex notation. In collaboration with saxophonist and arranger Benjamin Dousteyssier, these raw sonic materials were sculpted into a meticulously crafted score – a constellation of sound fragments, frozen in orchestral form.

Constellation is accompanied by Genevieve Murphy’s Together We Feel And Alone We Experience – a powerful meditation on collectivity and individuality. Originally imagined as a way to transform the orchestra into an extension of the bagpipes, the work evolved into a personal study of breath, resistance and control. Murphy delves into the physical and emotional demands of the instrument, revealing how even in moments of shared performance, the experience of sound — and self — remains intensely personal.
