Swiss pianist and composer Nik Bärtsch has developed a unique musical language that draws its energy from the tension between compositional precision and the self-circumvention of improvisation – as he puts it, “from self-implied restriction stems freedom”.
In this solo performance, he presents a selection of works from his ongoing Modul cycle, a body of music that has evolved over years and can be considered as templates rather than fixed compositions: he likens them to “a basic training in martial arts, which can be adapted to all sorts of situations…Each piece plays with the idea of composition, interpretation and improvisation, and is nourished by the same force, yet can create very surprising results…”
Drawing inspiration from architecture, urban spaces, and collective ritual and renowned internationally for his work with Zen-funk quartet RONIN and acoustic ensemble MOBILE, Bärtsch has built a devoted following across contemporary music, jazz and experimental scenes. This solo concert offers a rare opportunity to experience a UK performance by one of Europe’s most original musical voices.
