This programme – the result of the Nadar Summer School in collaboration with DE SINGEL, Gaudeamus, Warwaw Autumn and hcmf// – can be summed up in a single word: necessity. Necessity for a festival to programme unknown young composers to keep its finger on the pulse of what is going on in society today. Necessity for an ensemble to keep looking for new talent, fresh ideas and new forms of collaboration. Necessity for Iranian Golnaz Shariatzadeh and Polish Piotr Peszat to speak out, metaphorically or otherwise, about the political situation in their country today. Necessity for the UK’s Christine Cornwell and Romanian Adriana Minu to explore the hierarchical relationship between composer and musician through a co-creation process. Necessity for Scotsman Craig Scott to build his own instruments from economic reality, seeking the tension between the human and the mechanical.
