For their first appearance at hcmf//, daring new music ensemble Mivos Quartet presents a thrilling recital of works from their recent repertoire highlighting diverse facets contemporary music. Sivan Elder’s Solicitations transforms words and physicality into a three-movement web of musical gestures, ranging from the delicate up to the ravishing. Sixfivetwo, by renowned composer, wind player and improviser Henry Threadgill, was written as part of Kronos Quartet’s 50 for the Future initiative, combining terse harmonic language with the fluidity of improvisation and long melodic phrases.

In Doll Time, commissioned for Mivos by the Rainy Days Festival Luxembourg, Tokyo-based composer Chikako Morishita infuses her piece with what she dubs ‘a theatre of strangeness’, defying the expectations of performer and audience alike. Goerge Lewis’ String Quartet 2.5, Playing With Seeds is another Mivos commission, from the ECLAT Festival. It masterfully encapsulates his kaleidoscopic range of compositional aesthetics into a riveting musical journey.
