Violinist and curator Marie Schreer returns to hcmf// with a solo programme that explores questions of identity and voice. 

At its centre is Composer in Residence Lauri Supponen’s Picea, a work for violin, electronics and projection that frames the violin within a wider forest ecology. Tracing connections between spruce trees, instrument making and performance, Supponen imagines a history for the violin – from tree to instrument – by way of references to the violin music of the early Venetian Baroque.

Alongside Picea, Schreer premieres two commissions from her ongoing project until between. In a new work for violin and electronics, Jocelyn Campbell transforms recordings of Schreer’s own instrument into an expanded sonic portrait of its voice; while a second world premiere by composer and violinist yuniya edi kwon continues the exploration of voice, embodiment and selfhood that lies at the centre of until between, drawing on the unique expressive possibilities of the solo performer.

Through music that explores the violin as both instrument and living body, Schreer’s performance considers how sound can connect us to ourselves, to others and to the material world around us.
