Acclaimed violinist Marco Fusi presents a programme of world and UK premieres spanning five distinct, contrasting works that consider how the violin and viola might function as spaces of physical, perceptual and sonic metamorphosis; featuring newly commissioned works by Alex Harker and Bryn Harrison – whose the spectre…is always already a figure of that which is to come opened hcmf// 2025 – alongside Jarkko Hartikainen’s EMBODIED: Violin Solo, Justė Janulytė’s Psalms and a new viola version of Scott McLaughlin’s There is no gap between bird and song.

Themes of repetition, resonance, fragility, pressure and embodiment recur across the programme, the process of focusing attention on the bodies, materials and spatial surroundings of both the player and the instruments giving way to the emergence of sound. In each work, gestures made by the performer are not merely used as conduits through which musical material is realised but treated as subject matter itself: a mode of listening and testing, inventing new possibilities for how we might think about music, instrument, and performer together.
