Jürg Frey (Switzerland, 1953)
String Quartet No. 4 (2018 – 2020) 65’ UK Premiere

Swiss composer Jürg Frey writes masterful, calm, vast soundscapes. With his keen ear for colour, sound and precision, he composes music with a great serenity and lyricism; a poetic weightlessness, searching for the silence in the sound.

The composition of Frey’s string quartets is closely intertwined with his artistic development, each marking a particular point along his artistic biography. Montreal-based and internationally renowned Quatuor Bozzini performs String Quartet No.4 in five movements, written for them in 2020 after more than 20 years of collaboration and ‘quiet friendship with a mutual trust’ with Frey.

The quartet’s sensitive and precise chamber-playing is an optimal partner for Frey’s delicate shifts between ambiguous standstill and subtle energetic movement, without spectacle, without effort; visions of a patient journey through clouds with moments of luminosity.
