As part of hcmf// 2026, the award-winning installation Microtonal (co-created by Invisible Flock, Faqir Zulfiquar and Allah Jurio) will make a stop in Huddersfield (Wed 25 – Sat 28 Nov) during its very first tour of the UK. To mark the occasion, hcmf// has invited Jan Hendrickse – an instrument maker, performer and composer whose practice is informed by extensive research into woodwind traditions, particularly those of the Islamicate world – to develop a new work for borindo and electronics.  

Drawing on the deep history of ceramic technologies, Hendrickse’s new work explores clay as both material and metaphor – a substance transformed through the interplay of earth, water, air, and fire, these elemental processes becoming a conceptual framework for an evolving sonic practice. By bringing together an ancient ceramic instrument with contemporary instrumental and electronic techniques, the piece seeks to develop an expanded vocabulary for the borindo. 

Performing alongside Hendrickse is Faqir Zulfiqar, the Sindh folk musician and maker who is largely responsible for preserving the borindo from cultural extinction. A multi-instrumentalist, cultural coordinator and one of the last living masters of the borindo, he carries forward an ancient sonic tradition that teeters on the edge of extinction, his work preserving not just instruments, but the deep folk wisdom and meditative rhythms embedded in Sindh’s musical heritage.  

A unique opportunity to experience a one-off performance that, with every note, sustains a lineage of storytelling and spiritual connection – where music is not entertainment, but a form of remembering.
