Make the most of this year’s programme with an Opening Weekend Saver!
The Opening Weekend Saver includes admission to all events with a ticket price taking place on Friday 17, Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 November.
The festival opens on Friday 17 November with Composer in Residence Jennifer Walshe’s PERSONHOOD (2021), an experiment on identity where Norway’s longest-running contemporary orchestra, Oslo Sinfonietta, put charismatic accordionist Andreas Borregaard to the test. This is followed by a new work from Lithuanian composer and sound artist Arturas Bumšteinas, featuring electronics accompanied by the organ of St Paul’s Hall.
On the afternoon of Saturday 18 November, Oslo Sinfonietta presents the UK Premiere of a major new work by one of the most successful and in-demand British composers of her generation, Rebecca Saunders. Skull (2022/23) is written for 14 players, influenced in part by the writings of Haruki Murakami. In the evening, Laura Bowler’s Advert (2023) receives its World Premiere, tackling the human desire to self-advertise as a means of organising into tribes. The work is performed by Bowler alongside Decoder Ensemble. GBSR Duo close out the evening with the World Premiere of a new work for piano and percussion by Welsh composer Angharad Davies, alongside a solo performance from Lithuanian saxophonist Liudas Mockūnas.
On Sunday 19 November, interdisciplinary Belgian group Nadar Ensemble perform a programme of four works including a composition from Scottish sound artist Craig Scott, the successful applicant to our Nadar Summer School open call. Multi-instrumental quartet, Ensemble Nikel, perform with contemporary contralto Noa Frenkel, presenting works by Didem Coskunseven, Steven Daverson and Rebecca Saunders. The evening concert comes from New York-based Lithuanian composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė and Vilnius-formed contemporary ensemble Synaesthesis, performing Hadal Zone (2020/21) – a composition inspired by the ocean’s murky depths, written for the lower ranges of bass clarinet, tuba, cello, contrabass, piano and electronics, and featuring light projection. A series of landscape-themed works from Irene Murphy, Natalia Beylis, Óscar Mascarenas and Ann Cleare round out the weekend.
