Finnish violist Hanna Hohti delivers a performance that simultaneously looks to the past and ahead for inspiration. The title Seidr itself represents this, named for a type of Norse magic practised in the Stone Age that was said to both predict and shape the future. Hohti commissioned the four works woven together in this programme, her viola and live electronics complemented by sound design and electronics mastering by Anders Pohjola.
Tine Surel Lange’s Ginnungagap speaks to the primordial void in Norse mythology, while Jesper Nordin’s As if tied to a string envisions contemporary music technology’s reception in the distant past. Well-known politicians feature in Perttu Haapanen’s intoNations, scrutinising the intonations in their speech. The title work of this concert, composed by Josefine Opsahl, considers the common language of the viola and seidr magic practitioners.
As a programme, Seidr sets out to emphasise the shared history and long interaction of cultures in the Nordic region through composers from those countries. The electroacoustic form of this performance looks to predict the future of classical music – perhaps even shape it.
