Tattooing (wind and strings) is an improvised performance for cello, saxophone, electronics and a modified vinyl record lathe. During the piece, ongoing cello and saxophone performances are ‘tattooed’ to a blank disc by a handheld device. The newly formed and evolving record grooves are traced by multiple pickups, allowing separate portions of the record surface to contribute to the performance. These signals are further manipulated and reintroduced acoustically for the instrumental performer to respond to.

Using locked grooves (looping), ‘malfunction’ and sound fragments of instrumental performance makes for varied and complex sonic and musical textures. Acting as a third performer, the record lathe – which has been ‘circuit bent’ into a musical interface – offers characteristic change, rhythmic and melodic transformation and often unpredictable behaviour.
