Finn O’Hare (Scotland, 1995)

The ice melts. A temporary body whose mass disappears, dissolves, transforms into a fluid and merges with the earth or air. This natural transformation is not only visible but audible, as the process of expansion and retraction mirrors the ebb and flow of sound: resounding, fading, and falling silent.
Ääni, a collaborative project between sound artist Finn O’Hare, Birgit Widmer, and Martina Morger, explores the sonic and aesthetic qualities of melting ice. Through a combination of field recordings, interviews and sound collages, the project delves into the transformation of solid into liquid, and the voices of ice as they shift between states.
Building upon this context, Finn O’Hare is joined by viola player Emilian Teodor Danila to present a live performance based on an excerpt from Ääni. This work reimagines the soundscape of melting ice, blending pre-recorded elements with live instrumentation to create a performance that is both meditative and immersive, bringing the voice of ice to life once more as it merges natural sounds with the dynamic interplay of strings, dissolving into silence, and returning anew.
