EXAUDI brings three new works to Huddersfield first heard at this year’s Wittener Tage: Chiyoko Szlavnics weaves writings by Anne Carson and Sappho into a texture of spoken and sung voices and electronic sound; Naomi Pinnock strips the human voice bare in her stark Landscape, and Mikel Urquiza responds to pandemic frustration with virtuosic energy and sonic playfulness in HOWL. Lorenzo Pagliei’s Marea flusso deriva is part of his ongoing Il Libro dei Margini (‘The Book of Boundaries’), exploring the liminal states of consciousness between waking and sleeping in a brilliant madrigale rappresentativo, in which the singers move gradually from a turbulence of cloudy half-thoughts and inchoate desires into a deep sleep.
