Nikel is a quartet consisting of saxophone, electric guitar, percussion and piano, founded in 2006. A mix of traditional and contemporary, these instruments combine to form an alternative chamber music output where electric and acoustic sounds are fused into a unified sonic organism built on a wide yet discerning musical vocabulary. Their continual search for new musical ideas is not based on aesthetic prejudice or dichotomies of musical genres, but on passion and devotion to making and performing great music. Given the unique formation of the quartet, Nikel’s repertoire is entirely based on music written for the group by both established and up-and-coming composers.
At hcmf//, the quartet performs an adventurous programme of new music imbued with a sense of narrative and cinematics. Didem Coskunseven’s Ext. The Woods. Night is posited as a ‘sonic script’, while Steven Daverson’s La Nitroglycérine des Lumières takes inspiration from the early days of motion pictures. Us Dead Talk Love, meanwhile, sees Rebecca Saunders use streams of consciousness from Ed Atkins’ text ‘A Primer for Cadavers’ as its basis, intended for Noa Frenkel’s voice and Nikel’s instrumentation.
