What happens when notated and improvised music meet on equal terms?  

Centred on a “double trio” pairing, this unique collaboration brings together electroacoustic ensemble Electric Circus – whose flexible instrumentation on this occasion comprises Freya Goldmark (violin), Sarah Watts (bass clarinet) and Xenia Pestova Bennett (piano) – with Juno 3, a sonically and idiomatically adventurous improvising ensemble instigated by Berlin-based Korean-American guitarist Han-earl Park, with Pat Thomas (electronics) and Lara Jones (saxophone and electronics). 

The programme is stacked with premieres, including two newly commissioned works by Irish composers Ailís Ní Ríain and Rob Casey – both developed in collaboration with Juno 3 and written for the full double trio; Peter O’Doherty’s Cartographies of Resistance IV, offering a new perspective on sound, music and space; and Juno 3’s Proxemics VII, showcasing the trio’s distinctive approach to collective improvisation. 

Designed to place notated and improvised practices in direct dialogue, this cooperation between two innovative and intrepid ensembles offers audiences an experience that explores the shared and distinct territories of composed and improvised contemporary music.
