This concert features works written for Australian chamber ensemble, Decibel, by the founder and artistic director Cat Hope. Hope’s music is characterized by a focus on aleatoric elements, drone, glissandi, and low frequency sound is notated digitally as animated notation: in colour and in motion, read from networked iPads. This program, featuring music from the six-year period 2012 – 2018, features acoustic and electronic combinations that include subtone parts, live signal processing and co-composed approaches.
Hope’s music has been discussed in books such as Sonic Writing (Thor Magnusson, 2019) and Hidden Alliances (Schimmana, 2019), as well as periodicals such as Gramophone, Tempo, The Wire, Limelight, Corrie e Reverie and Neu Zeitschrift Fur Musik Shaft. Her monograph CD, Ephemeral Rivers, on Swiss label Hat [now] ART was awarded the German Critics Prize in 2017, and she has been named ‘one of Australia’s most exciting and individual creative voices’ by Gramophone UK (2017). Her 2022 release on Ezzthetics, Cat Hope – Decibel, features music written for the ensemble.
