Christopher Bowers-Broadbent has spent decades bringing the organ to life in bold, unexpected ways. Renowned for his fearless championing of contemporary music above all else, he has showcased works by composers including Messiaen, Tavener, Pärt, Montague, Rainier, Glass, Weir, Reich, Volans, Tüür, Cage, Maxwell Davies, Kagel and Lutyens, performing them all over the UK, US and Europe.
A former chorister at King’s College, Cambridge, Bowers-Broadbent studied organ and composition at the Royal Academy of Music, where he subsequently became Professor of Organ and a Fellow. His distinguished career includes posts at St Pancras Church, the West London Synagogue – where he composed a complete set of music for Evening and Morning Shabbat – and Gray’s Inn Chapel, where he was recently made an Honorary Bencher.
At hcmf// 2025, Bowers-Broadbent presents a programme that highlights his groundbreaking exploration of and collaboration in the works of Arvo Pärt, as well as his early acknowledgement of music by Philip Glass and other composers – including Judith Weir and Kevin Volans – of rare organ music in the 1980s.
