Networking Archive: UK-Indonesia Contemporary Music 2024
hcmf// and Perempuan Komponis: Forum & Lab are excited to offer 4 early career women and gender minority artists (2 based in the UK, and 2 based in Indonesia) the opportunity to take part in an international, music-interdisciplinary collaboration. Beginning with a digital residency spanning 3 months, the selected artists will draw on archives and local knowledge related to environmental sustainability and climate crisis in both countries as a starting point for creating a collaborative artistic response for presentation in Indonesia in September 2024 and Huddersfield in November 2024.
The digital residency will take place online between May and July 2024, focusing on artistic research, exploring experimental work in music as well as other media, and engaging in an active and constructive dialogue. In September 2024, the 2 UK-based artists will join their counterparts in Indonesia to further develop their artistic response and present a work-in-progress sharing, ahead of a final presentation of their co-created work in Huddersfield as part of hcmf// 2024 (which runs from 15 – 24 November 2024).
Participants will be supported by mentors from various backgrounds (such as composition, archiving and curating) throughout, and the residency process will be documented through articles, podcasts, zines and other visual content released via various publications, websites and social media.
Key information & eligibility
This opportunity is open to women and gender minority artists with a strong interest in music, archives and climate change/environmentalism. Artists working outside of music (eg. visual artists, artists working with multi-media) are welcome to apply, but all participants must be able to contribute to and take part in the presentation of a collaborative sound-based work.
The digital residency will include 6 mentored sessions (lasting 1.5 – 2 hours each) facilitated by hcmf// and Perempuan Komponis. Dates and times for these sessions will be fixed in discussion with the 4 successful applicants. We expect that participants will need to dedicate some time to their project (individually and/or as a group) outside of these sessions. Additional mentoring sessions may be arranged as required.
Participants must be able to travel to Indonesia for a period of approx. 7 days (including travel days) during the second half of September 2024. Please notify us of any dates when you are not available between 15 – 30 September within your application.
Participants must be able to travel to Huddersfield to present their work as part of hcmf// 2024. Please notify us of any dates when you are not available between 15 – 24 November within your application.
All 4 participants will receive a fee of £1,000, and travel and accommodation costs in relation to the events in Indonesia and Huddersfield will be covered.

About Perempuan Komponis: Forum & Lab
Perempuan Komponis: Forum & Lab is an Indonesian collective built on solidarity between Indonesian women and non-binary composers and musical artists. This laboratory is a safe space where inclusive musical exploration is encouraged, to promote the plurality of Indonesian music that is equitable and open to all. Through various programmes, Perempuan Komponis is a space to trace the musical knowledge of Indonesian women composers and artists from past to present, encouraging the creation of music and the exchange of musical ideas, styles and forms from the Indonesian archipelago.

– A statement describing why you would like to take part in the residency and how your work fits the relevant criteria (up to 300 words)
– A maximum of 3 relevant examples of your work, including audio examples if these exist
– Details of any dates when you are not available between 15 – 30 September 2024 and 15 – 24 November 2024
– A completed monitoring form (click here to download)
Applications may be written (2 sides of A4 max.) or they can take the form of a short video (2 minutes max). Written applications must be in either Word or PDF format. Video applications must not be in the style of a trailer/promo video and must provide the information outlined above. Audio/AV material must be in the form of web links – MP3/4 attachments will not be accepted.
Applicants must be based in either the UK or Indonesia, and applications must be submitted in English.
