This June, we’re excited to welcome Nicholas Moroz as our hcmf// Artist of the Month.

As a composer, Nicholas Moroz blew us away with Intralatent, performed at hcmf// 2019, by GBSR Duo, to an awed Huddersfield Town Hall audience. A landmark piece for Moroz, Intralatent indicated new developments in his work – sometimes tense, and at other times bombastic, it showcased an emotional counterpoint to Moroz’s technically proficient writing. He is continuing to establish himself as a composer, and in the coming weeks we’ll be taking a look at some of his key pieces, tracing changes in his sound.

Moroz is also a performer, and currently serves as the director of Explore Ensemble, a UK-based group who trade in radical, ‘rarely heard’ music. A mainstay of hcmf// in recent years, Explore are constantly rethinking the boundaries of new music. We’ve been fortunate enough to host them for immense back-to-back festival performances through 2016 to 2018. Most recently, Explore visited hcmf// as part of our broadcast series in 2020, performing new works by Joanna Bailie, Oliver Leith and Lawrence Dunn for our BBC Radio 3 programme.

Stay tuned through June for stories about Nicholas’ practice, both as a composer and as the director of Explore Ensemble.
