This July, we’re delighted to welcome Kin_ (Cultura Plasmic INC) as our Artist of the Month!
Currently creating music as part of the Sound Pioneers programme at the University of Hull, Kin is an artist working across field recording, musique concrete and multimedia installation. Her work emphasises interaction and immersion, and frequently uses rural environments as its setting.
Kin’s work also reflects on the practice itself, and interrogates the politics of recording and creating from sound; her 2017 work Watchtower explored online surveillance, coming at a key moment in our reckoning with the state and our privacy. She recently released Hurrian Cult Legacy, an EP surveying the rise of nationalism across the UK.
Kin’s work is strikingly self-effacing – stepping back from authored roles of ‘composer’ and ‘creator’, she favours pseudonyms that slot into the social and technological themes present in her music. We’re excited to hear more about the incredible breadth of the music she makes as Kin, from pieces for small ensembles to large-scale audio-visual works.
