Teresa Winter is an independent composer and musicologist from the Yorkshire coast, producing and performing experimental music working with electronics, collage and vocals. The Wire writes that she “excavates sonic memories to create narratives that sidestep time.” With a doctorate on the vitally important English composer and electronic music pioneer Delia Derbyshire, her work exists in conversation with the sonic and technological legacies of modernism, post-structuralist theory, and esoteric ritual practices.
In her collaboration with Christopher Duffin as part of the hcmf// shorts 2023 programme, Teresa performed a 20-minute improvisation, combining the tones of her violin and vocals with his saxophone, extending and processing pelagic drones with electronics. Both artists’ solo works often relate to the landscape and psychogeography of the English coast from where they both originate, against the backdrop of the North Sea. The comfort of the waves’ rhythms, textures and airs simultaneous with their vertiginous nature provided inspiration for this performance.
