A student of live and DIY electronics and an engineering specialist, Silvia Rosani has also written music for strings, brass and vocals, combining peculiar instrumentation choices into resonances that belong wholly to her. Rosani’s work is in constant conversation with its audience; the further she has gone into the academia and analytics of music, the more she has wanted to create music that is interactive and accessible, challenging the ‘social inequality’ of composition and the idea that only some people are ‘allowed’ to do it.
At hcmf// 2019 Silvia Rosani’s experiment was on the community: situating her sound installation Intermezzo 4 at the heart of Huddersfield’s Queensgate Market, she invited audience members to take part in the music, using contact microphones to create feedback on her metallic panels of percussion. The sounds were rich and resonant – the spirit of community, though, was what mattered most. As the final whirring drone faded away, everyone gave themselves a round of applause – an integral part of Rosani’s composition.
