A turntablist, performer and improviser, Mariam Rezaei’s prolific musical output draws on noise, sampling and glitch, playing club culture off of the experimental underground. A composer and curator, Rezaei’s work extends to TOPH, a mixed-use arts space she runs for DIY artists in Newcastle.
Rezaei’s recent work has demonstrated Rezaei’s unwavering versatility. With last year’s BLUD, she set contributions from fellow experimental musicians against a mix of vocal snapshots and turntable chaos. At hcmf// 2019 she premiered the hcmf// commissioned Wolf’s Tail, a fiercely political piece that borrowed ideas of phasing from Steve Reich, immersing the listener in a relay of sounds that invoked pressure, endurance and resistance – the emotions of being governed.
