Lia Su’s work considers the ways space, time and physicality impact our listening experience. She explores these relationships through sound, video, installation and live performance, making notable references to digital identity, cultural intersection and Eastern philosophy in an attempt to bring together spaces unbeknown to one another.
At hcmf// 2019, Su premiered 輪 (Repetition), a piece drawn up in direct response to the Huddersfield Immersive Sound System (HISS), the 66-loudspeaker system she had access to as part of her residency. For her, the HISS served as a repetitive, looping instrument – a ’wheel’ that could present both statis and change. Su complemented these ideas with visits to the Fayuan temple in Beijing, where she created field recordings with these repetitive qualities – including the ever-returning sounds of wind and birds.
