Riot Ensemble returns to Huddersfield with a programme of premieres by three of the most innovative and vibrant composers of their generation.
This concert begins with a World Premiere by British composer Heloise Tunstall-Behrens, whose work Riot first encountered as part of their Zeitgeist series of solo commissions awarded during the first Covid-enforced lockdown. Always keen to deepen relationships with composers they admire, this new commission is evidence of their championing composers they believe in. Next come two pieces, Spleen and Plexus, by Ukrainian composer Anna Korsun, another collaborator whose visionary soundworlds Riot has worked to present regularly in recent years. Incorporating vocalizations and instrumental cries, these works are compelling examples of Anna’s unique voice. The concert finishes with FRANCESCA by hcmf// Composer in Residence Lisa Streich, about which she says: ‘Maybe we already have our own idea of what a choir of cherubs sounds like. In most cases, it’s an idealized, heavenly, beautiful conception… When I looked at Antoniazzo Romano’s frescoes in the convent of Tor de’ Specchi in Rome, I was determined to hear what Santa Francesca Romana herself was hearing on her deathbed and afterward’.
Produced by hcmf// as part of the UK/Ukraine Season of Culture supported by the British Council and the Ukrainian Institute; also supported by STIM in collaboration with Stim Forward Fund, Export Music Sweden, Västra Götalandsregionen, The Swedish Composers Society (FST) and the Embassy of Sweden, the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation and the Hinrichsen Foundation
Tricomes is co-commissioned by hcmf// & BBC Radio 3
