Mariam Rezaei (UK, 1985) Wolf’s Tail (2019) World Premiere
Mariam Rezaei’s music knows no bounds – or it does, specifically it does, and it likes to go beyond them on purpose. Her new composition for turntables is a righteously dread-inducing slab of political protest, exploring how violence manifests through manifesto, and is inherent to the British Political system – not just of the past, but of right here and now. Wolf’s Tail is informed by Rezaei’s history as both a DJ and a decks improviser, bringing her bombastic mixing style to the fore. Written for a quartet of turntables, the piece borrows ideas of phasing from Steve Reich, immersing the listener in a relay of sounds that invoke pressure, endurance and resistance – the emotions of being governed.
